Cali, Columbia – July 31, 2013 – Canada’s Whitney McClintock of Cambridge, Ontario, captured a Bronze Medal today at the 2013 World Games in the Women’s Waterski Jump event with a jump of 47.4 metres. The competition took place at the Los Andes Club Waterski Club in Cali, Columbia and saw American Regina Jaquess win Gold with a jump of 49.4 metres. Greece’s Marie Vympranietsova took the silver with a jump of 49.1 metres.
“This was awesome jumping by Whitney,” commented Head Coach Steve Bush. “She went out of her comfort zone and it resulted in a bronze medal.”
The medal added to the silver she won the day before in the Women’s Slalom with a score of email@example.com, one buoy less than winner Regina Jaquess of the USA. Claire-Lise Welter of France took the bronze.
On Sunday Whitney had placed fourth in the Women’s Trick competition. She was the only skier at the World Games to make the final of all three event categories; trick, slalom, and jump.
Also on Sunday, her brother Jason McClintock, also of Cambridge, Ontario, captured Team Canada’s first medal of the 2013 World Games with a bronze in the Men’s Trick competition. His score of 9,760 points was 1,760 points shy of Gold Medalist Aliaksei Zharnasek of Belarus’s mark. Nicholas Benatti of Italy placed second with a score of 10,090.
“I just tried to stick to my plan,” said McClintock on his medal. “In the qualifying event I was a little off in my rhythm in my toe run, but was dialed and spot on through my hand run (the second run). I didn’t feel 100% today but I did manage to get most of the points out of my trick run. It felt good getting up on the podium at this event. This was my first World Games and I’m always happy bring home medals for Team Canada!”
The World Games are staged over a period of 11 days and take place every quadrennial in the year following the Summer Olympiad. The Games host thousands of athletes from 98 different countries competing in 37 sports. It follows the guidelines Olympic Charter and is supported by the International Olympic Committee.
After the World Games, the McClintocks will be returning to Canada for the Calgary Pro Shootout August 8-9 and the 2013 Canadian Waterski Championships August 10-14. Both at the Predator Bay Waterski Club in Calgary, AB.
