Your success at the next buoy all depends on how you set yourself up from the previous buoy to the first wake. If you haven’t done things right in this crucial part of the turn, it’s already too late. However, with a flawless transition from the turn to the first wake, most of your job is done and you can let the ski do the work without having to force it. You’ll be wide to the next buoy and ready to come into the wakes again, but only if you follow these tips. — Thomas Degasperi, Malibu Boats team skier
Get A Fast Start
Try to generate as much speed as you can from the end of the turn to the first wake. Then carry that speed across the second wake and you’ll be wide for the next turn. In skiing, speed is your friend.
Let Your Ski Work For You
You must be super patient in the turn. Let the ski work do the work for you, which means you have to initiate the turn with your legs and wait for the ski to edge into the water and come back in front of you to do the turn. After all, it’s not a game of blocking. It’s always a game of swinging.
Keep Your Feet Quick
When you’re leaving the second wake and heading into the buoy, try to keep your upper body as still and strong as possible. You need to be quick with your feet and move the ski around the buoy while keeping your upper body facing the same direction. It’s about extending your legs and moving the ski from the inside to the outside.
Time It Right
The buoy is not the beginning of the turn, it’s the end of the turn. You need to arrive early enough to be wide so you’re coming back in by the time you pass the buoy or it’s already too late.
Soften Your Wakes
The perfect wake crossing isn’t all about technique — you need the proper equipment too. After all, the softer your wakes the easier it will be to put all these tips into practice. The new hull design of the Malibu Response TXi is absolutely amazing. It’s actually kind of crazy what Malibu accomplished by changing the hull. The wakes are barely there, so crossing them is so much less complicated than it is on other boats.
