Normally, we here at WaterSki love the Internet. But this time it has double crossed us.
Head over to youtube.com and type in “basketball” and the most viewed clip is the 2006 NBA Slam Dunk contest — makes sense. Search for “wakeboarding” and you get glacier surfing in Alaska. That seems a little off topic, but OK. But when you enter “water skiing,” the most viewed clip is … a squirrel.
With a view count approaching the 500,000 mark, Twiggy the water-skiing squirrel is apparently what the Internet population at large wants to see. With skiers like Chris Parrish, Freddy Krueger and Clementine Lucine breaking records and pushing the sport as hard as they can, it apparently takes a rodent with a fluffy tail to get the public's attention. Not only is this little ruffian an Internet sensation, but since 1979 (spanning four skiing squirrels), Twiggy has been featured on such shows as Good Morning America and Late Night with David Letterman.
So listen up ski pros — grow a thick beard and switch to an all-nut diet, because apparently that's the only way you'll break into the mainstream.
