Bonnier Corp.’s WATERSKI magazine will host its third annual WATERSKI Awards, acknowledging and celebrating the accomplishments of the best three-event skiers in the world (slalom, trick and jump), on June 21 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
“Today’s top water-ski athletes deserve recognition for their incredible accomplishments aside from the brief moments they stand on the podium at major events,” said WATERSKI Editor Todd Ristorcelli. “They put a ton of time into honing their skills and flying around the world to compete, and it’s an honor to host an event that brings our industry together to celebrate their success.”
Awards for the 2012/2013 tournament season will include: Water-Ski Ambassador, Junior Skier, Male Slalom Skier, Female Slalom Skier, Male Tricker, Female Tricker, Male Jumper, Female Jumper and Skier of the Year.
WATERSKI editors, industry icons and elite coaches will determine the top three nominees in each category based on tournament performances from Aug. 3, 2012 to May 27, 2013.
In addition to the numerous record events held throughout the world from early August of last year until the end of May 2013, the major events considered for nomination include: Malibu Open, Calgary Pro Water Ski Shootout, Soaked, Diablo Shores Pro Am, Chile Night Jump, Ski Paradise Invitational, MasterCraft Australian Open, Moomba Masters, Masters, Perth Night Jump, and the Waterski World Cup in Mandurah, Australia, and Palembang, Indonesia.
“It’s a tight race right now among athletes in several award categories,” said Ristorcelli. “The Male Slalom Skier award winner will most likely be decided at the final cutoff date. World-record holder Chris Parrish is back in the game with a couple of big wins early this year; 2011 Male Slalom Skier of the Year Will Asher dominated the course last fall; and last year’s winner, Nate Smith, has multiple wins and several passes into 43 off.”
Last year’s award winners featured in WATERSKI magazine included: K.C. Wilson and Erika Lang for Male and Female Junior Skier of the Year, respectively; Dana Reed for Water-Ski Ambassador; Regina Jaquess for Female Slalom Skier of the Year; Nate Smith for Male Slalom Skier of the Year; Clementine Lucine for Female Tricker; Aliaksei Zharnasek for Male Tricker; Freddy Krueger for Male Jumper of the Year; and Natallia Berdnikava for both Female Jumper and Skier of the Year.
“It will be interesting to see which athlete will come out on top regardless of gender or discipline, and accept our Skier of the Year Award,” said Ristorcelli. “Last year’s winner, Berdnikava, has been absent from competition for most of the events considered for this year’s awards. Other veteran competitors like Freddy Krueger, last year’s Male Jumper of the Year, will definitely be on the shortlist for this prestigious award with his dominance this season.”The 2013 WATERSKI Awards — sponsored by Malibu Boats, Masterline, Prospec Electronics, HO Skis/Syndicate, DB Ski, Babe’s Boat Care, Marine Formula STA-BIL, Toyou Snacks and SeaDek — will be held at the Harley- Davidson Museum. Award winners will receive custom water skis by DB Ski and will be featured in WATERSKI magazine, which celebrates its 35th anniversary this year. The dinner and awards ceremony will be presided over by WATERSKI’s Ristorcelli.
“Last year’s awards ceremony was a fun, memorable event that was tied in with some unforgettable skiing at the Malibu Open,” said Ristorcelli. “We hope to build on that momentum, and make the 2012- 2013 WATERSKI Awards an even bigger party.”
Launched in 1978, WATERSKI magazine is the ultimate resource and unchallenged leading publication for water skiers. It is written for enthusiasts seeking information on water-sports boats, gear and behind-the-boat techniques.
