FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Oct. 8, 1999 – USA Water Ski announced today that it has approved 20 towboats from 10 manufacturers for use in sanctioned competitions in 2000 following USA Water Ski's annual Towboat Evaluations, Sept. 12-16, in Elk Grove, Calif. The following towboats have been approved for use in Class C and above USA Water Ski sanctioned tournaments: Ski Nautique, Ski Nautique Open Bow and Sport by Correct Craft; ZX-1 by Infinity; Response LX1:1, Response LX 1.5:1 and FlightCraft by Malibu; ProStar 190, ProStar 195, ProStar 205 and Sportstar by MasterCraft; Boss 190 by MB Sports; Kanga, Outback and Outback LS by Moomba; Eclipse by Ski Centurian; Comp and Legacy by Supra; Epic 21 by Toyota; and DXII Barefooter by Sanger.
The annual evaluations were conducted by USA Water Ski's National Towboat Committee, technical experts and elite water ski athletes. Each approved towboat has met or exceeded a set of performance standards established by the Committee to verify suitability for tournament use. The standards insure skiers, drivers and officials optimum conditions in competitions.
Each towboat must pass a series of 11 tests and sub-tests to qualify as an approved tournament towboat. Boats were evaluated on power and acceleration, handling and maneuverability, engineering, drivability, sound level, slalom course center-line deviation, slalom spray, jumping center-line deviation, jumping wake, slalom wake and tricks wake.
“I think the competitive water ski athletes will be very pleased with the outstanding towboats USA Water Ski approved for the 2000 season,” said Bob Schouten, USA Water Ski's competition coordinator. “The center-line deviation (tracking) of all of the towboats was better than any other towboat evaluation in recent history by a significant margin. Skiers won't be pulling the boats off center this year.”
Upon approval, manufacturers are encouraged to actively participate in USA Water Ski sanctioned tournaments. With involvement in a predetermined number of sanctioned tournaments at various levels of competition, a boat becomes eligible to participate in Regional championships and is on the path to pulling one of the most sought after events in the United States P the Water Ski National Championships.
The Towboat Evaluations were sponsored by Straight Line Watersports, Airguide Instruments, Indmar Marine Engines, Johnson Propeller, PerfectPass and Ski Safe Insurance.
USA Water Ski was formed in 1939 as a non-profit organization promoting water skiing in the United States. USA Water Ski is affiliated with the International Water Ski Federation (world governing body) and is recognized by the United States Olympic Committee and Pan-American Sports Organization as the national governing body of competitive water skiing in the United States.
