MasterCraft ProStar 197
Recommendation: Hard-core Ski
The ProStar 197 is a world-class tournament ski boat thanks to the EVO hull, now entering its third year. The side-vented step design minimizes the running surface when the boat flies through the slalom course at 36 mph, leading to a wake that has been involved with numerous records, including a 1 at 43 off last summer to tie the world mark. New men's jump and trick world records were set last year as well with the EVO hull, which is five-event approved by USA Water Ski.
Ski purists may opt for the ProStar 190 with this hull, but the 197 is the same boat with an open bow. Family-friendly amenities such as a flip-out walk-through seat, convertible rear sun deck and dual-access cooler also complement the swiveling ski pylon and a storage trunk for a 71-inch slalom ski. New design tweaks for 2004, from the black dash and armrest to the metallic gauges with chrome bezels and perforated vinyl, help the 197 look more stylish than ever.
The ProStar 197 makes the most of its world-class hull design with a deceptive 91-inch beam, which actually looks and feels much wider. These are top-of-the-line slalom wakes, very soft and very small. This is a boat that rookie slalom-course skiers will be just as ecstatic with as tour veterans because the wakes at slower speeds and longer line lengths encourage aggressive wake crossings. World-class tracking is also assured because of a tunable rudder and rack-and-pinion steering, which allow the driver to be in complete rhythm with the skier and drive a straight path. If you want to become a better skier, the ProStar 197 is a boat that can certainly take your skiing to a whole new level.
