MB Sports 220 V
For families interested in the benefits of a V-drive without getting a supersized boat, MB Sports suggests the 220 V as a happy medium — and so do we. This model is similar to MB's high-end B-52 except that the wakeboarding attitude steps aside so the luxury aspects can take center stage.
The richness of the 220 V emanates from every inch of the thick, cushy upholstery found from the open bow through the wraparound lounge and across the sun deck. Billet speaker grilles and MB logos inset throughout the interior create some stylish sparkle. The tower's progressive design really completes the whole look.
Riding in the 220 V, we kicked back in the perfectly inclined rear seat. Driving it was just as relaxing thanks to large gauge displays, Perfect Pass and easy-to-use controls for opening the rear hatch and filling the ballast.
The 220 V's ski wakes are surprisingly small for a V-drive, and they're fairly soft at 15 off when traveling at slow skiing speeds. The bumps and spray grow more noticeable shorter down the line, but families just looking to mix a little skiing into the weekend fun won't mind.
The ballast system is the story here: a heavy-duty 1,600 pounds added at the flip of a switch in two tanks built into the hull. All that weight minimizes or entirely eliminates the need for fat sacks. The wakes become meaty and solid with a smooth transition. We prefer attacking these swells at longer line lengths to take advantage of their size and characteristics.
• Families who want a big V-drive without getting a BIG V-drive should test drive the 220 V.
• While this boat has a wakeboarding pedigree, it offers something for skiers, too.
• Built-in ballast has 1,600-pound capacity.
• The wraparound lounge is especially comfortable, with thick vinyl and thoughtful contours.
• Rear sun deck can rise as one piece with hydraulic lift controlled at the helm, or side compartments lift separately by hand.
