Let’s start with the bottom line: The Moomba Outback is the most inexpensive boat approved by USA Water Ski for sanctioned tournaments. The difference in the base MSRPs isn’t just a matter of a few hundred dollars–it’s thousands. This year, a series of upgrades–most prominent of which is that the standard engine is now EFI for greater customer satisfaction–nudged the price up to $27,995. That’s still an unbeatable deal in this market, whether you’re looking to win a tournament or just get your first water-sports boat and see just how much better an inboard is over a stern-drive.
Moomba introduced the Outback’s current hull in 2003, and ever since, we’ve been impressed with its slalom wakes. From recreational line lengths of 15 off all the way to a shortline of 35 off, the wakes are soft and small, barely rising above the surface level of the water as the Outback races along at tournament speeds in the 30s. To create the hull, Moomba engineers used their instinctive feel for the water and expertise in boatbuilding, rather than any computer-assisted design. The deep keel, negative chines, lifting strake and 12-degree deadrise all contribute to the handling, stability and smooth wake.
USA Water Ski put this boat through a rigorous 11-step process to see if the acceleration, tracking, spray and other factors would be tournament-worthy. Only 11 models made the cut for 2006, and the Outback was one of them. That said, adding on a few options quickly taps the potential of the Outback as a crossover wakeboarding boat.
